Mechelen
Mechelen is world-famous for the carillon art of its Sint-Rombouts Cathedral, which houses the Royal Carillon Institute and attracts students from around the world wishing to master this demanding instrument. Het Anker's Gouden Carolus beer, brewed since the 15th century, is one of Belgium's most prestigious ales and can be tasted directly at the house brewery. Halfway between Brussels and Antwerp, Mechelen is a relaxed alternative to its more tourist-heavy neighbours and impresses with canals, city palaces and a lively restaurant scene.
