Located in the Walloon part of Belgium near the French border. Mons served as European Capital of Culture in 2015 and each year celebrates the Doudou, the oldest continuously held city festival in Belgium, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, reaching its climax with the combat of St George against the dragon. The city was also Van Gogh's place of work in the Borinage coal-mining region, where the painter lived as a lay preacher among the mining communities. The reconstructed belfry of the collegiate church towers over the hilly city skyline and is listed as part of the Flemish Belfries UNESCO heritage.
