Nijmegen
Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands with over 2,000 years of continuous history and a significant past as a Roman garrison town (Noviomagus Batavorum), impressively documented in the Valkhof Museum. The Vierdaagse, a four-day walk of up to 200 km, is the world's largest multi-day walking event and transforms the city each July into a vast popular festival attracting over one million spectators. The location on the Waal amid the Dutch river landscape offers superb cycling routes along the dykes and to the nature-protected riverside areas of Gelderse Poort.
