Varaždin
Located in northern Croatia, near the Slovenian and Hungarian borders. Varaždin served as the Croatian capital in the 18th century and with its magnificent baroque palaces, the imposing city castle and its unique historic cemetery designed as a park-like garden, it forms one of the most beautiful baroque ensembles in Southeast Europe. The annual Špancirfest transforms the pedestrian zone into a colourful stage for street artists and musicians from around the world. As the Capital of Baroque, Varaždin offers an elegant alternative to the coast that, despite its high quality, is still overlooked by many visitors to Croatia.
