Located in southeastern Poland, near the Ukrainian border. Zamość bears the nickname 'Padua of the North' and is one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance cities – the main square designed by a Venetian architect, lined with colourful arcaded houses, is regarded as a UNESCO masterpiece of urban planning. Built in the 16th century as an ideal city according to Italian principles, the town has preserved its harmonious ensemble of fortifications, cathedral and burgher houses almost entirely intact. Well off the major tourist routes, Zamość offers an authentic, lively old town still characterised by genuine urban life.
